Best trivia team names: funny, clever, and punny
173 team names in nine lists, from safe-for-work to groan-out-loud, plus a short guide to picking one the whole table will sign off on.
A team name is the first answer you give on quiz night, and the only one the host reads out every round. It does not need to be brilliant. It needs to be short, sayable, and something your team is happy to hear announced in a room full of strangers. Skim the lists below, pick one, or combine two.

How to pick a trivia team name
- Keep it short. Two to four words. It has to fit on a scoresheet and survive being read aloud six times.
- Say it out loud first. If the host stumbles over it, the room will not remember it.
- Match the room. A work event and a Tuesday bar quiz call for different names. Same for a family night.
- Get the table to agree. The best name is the one nobody at the table is embarrassed by. Vote if you have to.
- Keep it clean. Hosts skip or censor names that would not pass in a room with kids. Fun beats edgy.
- Make it yours. Combine two from the lists, add your city or a running joke. Nobody else will have it.
Got a name? Test it
Warm up with today's 10-question daily, run a room where everyone answers on their phone with group play, or print a quiz with an answer key for the night. Every question comes with a cited source, so the post-round arguments stay short.
Quick answers
- What makes a good trivia team name?
- Short, easy to say, and a fair reflection of the people at the table. Funny works almost everywhere; clever suits a competitive room; keep it clean unless you know the host well.
- Funny or clever?
- Funny for a casual bar quiz, clever for a league night or a work event. If you cannot decide, pick a pun: it reads as both.
- What if our team name is already taken?
- Add a number, a location, or a year (The Brain Trust 2026, Quiz Kids Downtown), or swap one word. Most hosts will let two teams share a name, but it makes the leaderboard confusing.
- Can we use a pop culture reference not everyone knows?
- Yes, if your own team gets it. The name is for you, not the room. If you are playing with new people, pick something more general.
- Should we change our name for each event?
- Up to you. Regulars tend to keep one name so the host and the leaderboard recognise them; one-off teams often pick a name that fits the night's theme.
- How long should a team name be?
- Two to four words. Longer names get shortened by the host, and they do not fit on scoreboards or screens.
- Can we use emoji in a team name?
- Depends on the venue. Paper scoresheets cannot show them and some quiz apps strip them, so check with the host first.
