50 free Christmas Cookie trivia questions with answers — food & drink quiz, new questions added Aug 2026.
40 free Christmas Cookie trivia questions with answers. Christmas baking is older and stranger than the tin of shop-bought biscuits suggests. These 50 questions cover the whole tray: the medieval spice trade that produced the flavours, the German imports that put cookie cutters in American kitchens, and the Depression-era custom of leaving a plate out on Christmas Eve. The quiz travels through the great European holiday biscuits — springerle dried for a day before baking, lebkuchen on its wafer base, pizzelle pressed in an iron, speculaas with black pepper in the spice mix, Scottish shortbread and its petticoat tails — and finishes with candy canes, from a Cologne choirmaster's bribe to the machine a priest patented in 1957. Every answer was checked against a primary reference before publication, so the dates, regions and recipes here are accurate rather than repeated from a recipe blog. Run it at a cookie exchange and watch somebody discover their family recipe has a 700-year history.

Q 04Since which decade have US and Canadian children left cookies and milk out on Christmas Eve?
The 1930s

Victoria and Albert

Q 08Which two regions of southern Germany have baked springerle for centuries?
Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are the springerle heartland: the pale biscuits are pressed in carved wooden moulds so each carries an embossed picture, and neighbouring Switzerland shares the tradition.
Q 09How far back can springerle be traced?
The 14th century
The 14th century is as far back as springerle can be traced, in Swabia in south-western Germany, where the embossed biscuits were pressed from carved wooden moulds long before they became a Christmas staple.
Q 10How is springerle dough treated before it goes in the oven?
Left to dry for about 24 hours
Left to dry for about 24 hours is the traditional step: the moulded dough rests uncovered overnight so the surface sets and the embossed picture holds its shape in the oven, while the base rises into the characteristic foot.
Q 11How does anise flavour get into a traditional springerle?
It is dusted onto the baking sheets
It is dusted onto the baking sheets: whole anise seeds are scattered on the tray and the dried, moulded biscuits set on top, so the seeds stick to the base and perfume the cookie as it bakes.
Q 12Who is said to have invented lebkuchen, and when?
Monks in Franconia in the 13th century
Monks in Franconia in the 13th century are said to have invented lebkuchen; their monasteries had the honey and imported spices the recipe needs, and lebkuchen bakers were recorded in Ulm as early as 1296.

Q 21What is the traditional ratio for shortbread?

Q 22What are triangular wedges of shortbread known as?

Petticoat tails are the triangular wedges cut from a round of shortbread; the name is often linked to Mary, Queen of Scots, whose ladies' petticoats the shape supposedly resembled, though the evidence is thin.

Q 14What is the thin wafer base under a traditional lebkuchen called?

Abruzzo
Abruzzo is the home of pizzelle: the thin, patterned waffle cookies, known locally as ferratelle, are credited to the town of Ortona and spread from there into neighbouring Molise and Lazio.
Q 16What equipment gives pizzelle their pattern?
An iron like a waffle iron

Q 24Which ingredient gives a snickerdoodle its signature texture and tang?
Cream of tartar
Cream of tartar is the key: the acidic ingredient reacts with baking soda to give a snickerdoodle its slight tang and soft chew, and its use is the usual line drawn between a snickerdoodle and a plain sugar cookie.
