60 free Dalmatian trivia questions with answers — nature quiz, new questions added Aug 2026.
This Dalmatian trivia quiz is about the breed itself first and the films second. It covers the white-at-birth puppies and how their spots develop, liver versus black, patches, lemon and orange, the AKC standard, litter sizes, shedding and the low-oil coat that keeps the dogs clean. There is a whole run on health: the deafness studies from four countries, BAER testing, blue eyes and the piebald gene, uric acid, gout and the Dalmatian-Pointer Backcross Project that split the breed clubs. History questions go back to Bishop Peter of Đakovo in 1375 and Canis Dalmaticus, through Bewick's 'Coach Dog', Vero Shaw's 1882 standard, Regency status symbols, carriage dogs versus highwaymen, horse-drawn fire engines and the Budweiser wagon. Pop culture gets its share too: Dodie Smith's nine Dalmatians and the fur-coat remark that sparked the novel, the Twilight Barking, Disney's xerography, Glenn Close, Cruella's Oscar and Marshall from PAW Patrol. For deep film questions, see our separate 101 Dalmatians quiz. Questions run from easy to expert with the difficulty shown on each one, and every answer was checked against a reference page and carries its citation.

Q 01The Dalmatian breed takes its name from a historical region of which modern country?
Croatia
The FCI officially lists Croatia as the breed's country of origin, citing church chronicles going back centuries.
Q 02What colour are Dalmatian puppies when they are born?
Plain white
The first spots usually appear within about 10 days and keep developing until the dog is around 18 months old.
Q 03Besides black, what is the other standard spot colour in Dalmatians?
Liver
It is recessive, so both parents must carry the gene, and liver-spotted dogs always have brown noses.
Q 04What colour nose does a liver-spotted Dalmatian always have?
Brown
Black-spotted dogs always have black noses, and the rarer orange and lemon dogs are told apart the same way.
Q 05Roughly how large are a Dalmatian's spots?
2 to 6 cm
Anything larger is a 'patch', which is present from birth.
Q 06How can a 'patch' on a Dalmatian be told apart from a cluster of overlapping spots?
It has a smooth edge and no white hairs in it
Patches are visible at birth, most often on the head, ears or tail.
Q 07How tall does an adult Dalmatian stand under the American Kennel Club standard?
19 to 23 inches
That is 48 to 58 cm, a muscular medium-large dog built for endurance.

Six to nine pups
The fictional Perdita's litter of 15 in the Disney film is unusually large.
Q 09What advantage do long-coated Dalmatians have over the smooth-coated variety?
Far less shedding
Standard smooth coats shed heavily all year, and the stiff white hairs weave into almost any fabric.
Q 10Why do Dalmatians lack the typical 'dog smell' and stay relatively clean?
Their coats contain very little oil
The downside is that those short, stiff hairs shed year-round.

UK, Swiss and German studies put the figure between 16.5 and 19.6 per cent.

Mature melanocytes
The same pigment cells that make spots also help the inner ear develop, which is why the problem runs through white-coated breeds.

The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response test can detect deafness in each ear separately.

Breeding from blue-eyed dogs is frowned upon and blue eyes count as a fault in the UK show ring.

Purines
That means avoiding organ meats and animal by-products.
