50 free The Erie Canal trivia questions with answers — history quiz, new questions added Aug 2026.
When it opened in 1825, the Erie Canal was the second-longest canal on Earth, and it was dug by men who had never built a canal before. This Erie Canal trivia quiz covers the whole story: Jesse Hawley scheming from debtors' prison, Thomas Jefferson calling it madness, DeWitt Clinton's 'Big Ditch', the Irish labourers and amateur surveyors who carried it up the Niagara Escarpment, and the ten-day flotilla that ended with Lake Erie water poured into New York Harbor. You will also meet the canal at work: mules and hoggees on the towpath, packet boats and their 4 mph speed limit, the toll revenue that paid off the debt in a year, John D. Rockefeller's oil barges, and the 20th-century Barge Canal that abandoned half the original route. Questions run from easy to expert, and every answer is verified and cited to its reference page.
