40 free International Literacy Day trivia questions with answers — trivia quiz, new questions added Oct 2026.
Every year the world sets aside a day to celebrate one of the most powerful skills a person can have: the ability to read and write. UNESCO created International Literacy Day in the 1960s to remind governments and communities that hundreds of millions of adults still cannot read a simple sentence, and that most of them are women. This quiz covers the day itself, then follows the story of literacy from the first marks pressed into clay to the arrival of printing, the spread of free lending shelves and the teachers, campaigners and authors who opened reading to everyone. Expect questions on famous scripts, national campaigns that taught whole countries to read, and the stories and shows that turn children into readers. It is written for teachers and librarians planning a classroom activity for the day, for reading groups and quiz hosts, and for anyone who cannot walk past a bookshop. Every answer comes with a short explanation, so each question doubles as a fact worth sharing.
