Paper Mario started life as a follow-up to a Super NES role-playing game, lost its original developer to Final Fantasy VII, and only became flat and paper-thin when its art director decided polygons could not make the cast look cute. Six games later it has been a turn-based RPG, a side-scrolling platformer that flips into 3D, a sticker album, a paint job and an origami festival, with fans arguing over every shift in direction along the way.
