100 free Pearls trivia questions with answers — nature quiz, new questions added Oct 2026.
Pearl trivia for jewellery lovers, gem collectors, divers and anyone who has ever wondered whether a grain of sand really starts the whole thing (it almost never does). This quiz covers the science first: the mantle tissue that secretes nacre, the aragonite platelets that make it iridescent, why vinegar dissolves a pearl and how an X-ray tells a natural pearl from a cultured one. Then it moves to the history and the trade: the Persian Gulf and Sri Lankan fisheries praised by Pliny, the slave-worked beds of Cubagua and Margarita, Kokichi Mikimoto and the 1916 patent that made cultured pearls a mass product, and the modern names, Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, freshwater, and what they mean. The famous individual pearls are here too: La Peregrina, once nearly swallowed by Elizabeth Taylor's puppy, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, the Pearl of Puerto and Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, plus Steinbeck's novella and Japan's ama divers. Questions range from easy to expert, and every answer was checked against a reference page and carries its source. If you enjoy this quiz, try our gemstones, oceans and jewellery quizzes next.
