Serie A has been played as a national league since 1929, and the Italian championship goes back to a single afternoon in Turin in 1898. This quiz covers the whole span: Genoa's early titles, Ambrosiana winning the first Serie A, the Grande Torino, Gunnar Nordahl's five scoring titles, Bologna's play-off in 1964, Verona's miracle in 1985, Maradona's Napoli, Sacchi and Capello's Milan, the Calciopoli scandal that sent Juventus to Serie B, Inter's treble and Juventus's nine consecutive scudetti. There are questions on the trophy and the shield, the capocannoniere award, the derbies of Milan, Rome and Italy, and the record holders: Silvio Piola's 274 goals, Francesco Totti's 250 and 162 assists, Gianluigi Buffon's ten titles and 299 clean sheets, Paolo Maldini's 25 seasons, Giovanni Trapattoni's seven titles as a coach and Rafael Leão's 6.2-second goal. If you want the continental picture, our Champions League quiz picks up where this one leaves off. About a third of the questions are easy for anyone who watches Italian football, a third are medium and the rest are for people who know which club has spent the most seasons in Serie B. Every answer is checked against the league's reference and record pages, and each question carries its source.
