40 free State Mottos trivia questions with answers — geography quiz, new questions added Oct 2026.
Every US state has a motto, and together they read like a short history of the country. Some are a single word, some are lines of Latin older than the republic, and a few arrived by way of a public contest or a schoolboy's petition. This quiz asks you to match states to their mottos, from Eureka and Excelsior to Live Free or Die, and to work out what the Latin, French, Spanish and Hawaiian ones mean. It also covers the seals the mottos appear on and the poets, senators and revolutionaries who first wrote the words. It suits road-trip families, students revising the fifty states, and pub quizzers who want the story as well as the answer. Every question comes with a short explanation.
