The Inbetweeners arrived on E4 in May 2008 with 238,000 viewers and a lukewarm reception, and finished three series later with the biggest audience the channel had ever had. Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, two former Channel 4 commissioners, built it around a briefcase-carrying private-school refugee, his hot-headed best mate, a compulsive liar and a gentle giant at a fictional comprehensive called Rudge Park — and the suburban ordinariness was the point. Two films followed: the first set the record for a comedy opening weekend in Britain; the second outgrossed every other British film of 2014.
