Skylanders turned a shelf of plastic figures into a video game cast. Put a character on the Portal of Power and it appears on screen, carrying its upgrades with it from one console to the next. Across six main games between 2011 and 2016 the roster grew past 140 heroes, each tied to an element and many with a pun for a name.
